Itinerary

Day

1

Depart London Heathrow 0930 on Germanwings, arriving Cologne Bonn Airport 1155. Transfer to Bonn for six nights at Hilton Bonn Hotel. Guided tour of Beethoven-Haus and recital on the square piano by the Tour Director.

Day

2

Morning lecture followed by guided walking tour of Bonn. Afternoon: Old Cemetery (where Beethoven’s mother and Robert and Clara Schumann are buried). Evening concert at Bonn World Conference Centre Concert Hall featuring MDR Sinfonieorchester and Marino Formenti (piano): B. Lang Piano Concerto (world premiere), Beethoven Piano Concerto No 3 and Strauss Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks, op 28.

3

Whole day excursion to Aachen: 14th century Rathaus, Couven-Museum, cathedral (treasury and Charlemagne’s marble throne). Evening concert at Bonn World Conference Centre Concert Hall featuring András Schiff (piano): late Beethoven piano sonata with works by Liszt, Janáček, Schubert & Schumann (details TBC).

4

Morning lecture followed by Schumann-Haus including piano recital by Tour Director. Afternoon concert at Bonn World Conference Centre Concert Hall featuring Dénes Várjon (piano): late Beethoven piano sonata with works by Liszt, Janáček, Schubert & Schumann (details TBC). Evening concert at Kreuzkirche (Cross Church) featuring Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Adam Fischer (conductor): Beethoven Overture from J W von Goethe’s tragedy ‘Egmont’, Hayden Symphony No 101 and Beethoven Symphony No 5.

Morning: Museum of German History. Afternoon concert at Bonn World Conference Centre Concert Hall featuring Dénes Várjon (piano): late Beethoven piano sonata with works by Liszt, Janáček, Schubert & Schumann (details TBC). Evening concert at Bonn World Conference Centre Concert Hall: András Schiff (piano): late Beethoven piano sonata with works by Liszt, Janáček, Schubert & Schumann (details TBC).

Day

6

Morning river cruise on the Rhine from Bonn to Remagen. Continue by coach to Maria Laach: 12th century Romanesque Maria Laach abbey church with organ recital by Tour Director.

Depart Cologne Bonn 1335, arriving Heathrow 1405.
