Itinerary

Day

1

Depart Stansted 1330 on Ryanair, arriving Tours 1550. Seven nights at the Hôtel Oceana L’Univers.

Day

2

Morning: Royal Chateau de Blois (14th century castle reconstructed in the Renaissance style by François I). Afternoon: Chateau d’Amboise, Chateau du Clos Lucé (Leonardo’s home for three years until his death in 1519) and the recreated Renaissance gardens of Villandry.

3

Morning: Tours Musée des Beaux-Arts (housed in the former Archbishops’ Palace), followed by visit to the nearby Gothic Cathédrale St-Gatien (magni cent stained-glass windows). Afternoon: excursion to the village of Troo, and 11th-12th century church of St-Jacques-des-Guérets (1,000 year old murals of The Cruci xion and The Resurrection of the Dead).

4

Morning: early departure for Renaissance Chateau de Chenonceau (former home of Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de’ Medici with magni cent picture collection). Free afternoon and evening.

Morning in Montreuil-Bellay on the river Thouet (ancient ramparts dating back 1,000 years) with visit to Chateau de Montreuil-Bellay (beautifully furnished rooms and medieval kitchen with tasting of AOC wines). Afternoon at Fontevraud-l’Abbaye: 16th century cloisters, original refectory and chapterhouse, octagonal Romanesque kitchen and smokeroom and 12th century abbey church (recumbent e gies of Henry II, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, their crusader son Richard the Lionheart, and Isabelle, wife of King John).

Whole day excursion to Angers: walking tour followed by visits to Château Angers, Cathédrale St Maurice and Museé des Beaux-Arts.

7

Morning: Chateau de Chambord (with famous escalier à double revolution traditionally credited to Leonardo). Afternoon: return to Tours via Château de Beauregard (16th century hunting lodge of François I with spectacular Galerie des Illustres, a painted Almanach de Gotha of French royalty).

Day

8

Morning: Chateau de Cheverny (built in the early 17th century by Count Hurault de Cheverny with ne tapestries and ceiling paintings). Depart Tours 1615, arriving Stansted 1640.
