The Allegri String Quartet at Stapleford Granary
|November, 2018 | Tour Director: Robert Hanson|
• Experience one of the UK’s foremost string quartets at the newly refurbished Stapleford Granary, the home of the ACE Foundation
• Explore how early twentieth century composers stretched the boundaries of the quartet medium
• Discover a rich programme of Late Romantic and Early Modern treats in the company of expert musicologist Dr Robert Hanson
ACE Cultural Tours is delighted to collaborate with the internationally renowned Allegri String Quartet to offer a weekend of concerts at the newly improved arts centre at Stapleford Granary.
Showcasing the exciting developments in string quartet writing as Late Romanticism evolved into Early Modernism at the turn of the twentieth century, we will hear how the horizons of the quartet medium extended into wonderful new areas of sound and feeling, whilst a better understanding of the radical changes in musical language typified a period of unparalleled richness across Western culture.
Our Tour Director, a long-standing partner of the Allegri Quartet, will illustrate compositional, textural and structural points across a range of quartets. His in-depth talks will be animated with excerpts performed by the Allegri group.
Our base for these performances and talks will be the newly extended arts centre and concert space at Stapleford Granary, which has provided a home for the ACE Foundation and its subsidiary ACE Cultural Tours since 2012. Building work is scheduled to finish in the spring of 2018, coinciding with ACE’s 60th anniversary year, creating a stunning low energy office space and providing further creative areas for music and the arts.
In the course of the tour, we also hope to include a guided visit to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, a longstanding ACE partner, introducing their collection of musical manuscripts.
This tour will be led by Tour Director, Robert Hanson, PhD. Robert was formerly Director of Music at Morley College, and is a composer and musicologist as well as a practising musician. For many years, Robert has collaborated closely with the Allegri Quartet.
