Born in Vienna, Alex has lived and studied in Salzburg, Oxford and Cambridge and has travelled extensively throughout Europe and the Near East.
Alex gained his PhD in the history of art from Magdalene College, Cambridge, and has lectured and supervised at the university.
In addition to his interest in art history, Alex is a linguist, numbering German, French, Italian and Russian amongst his languages.
